Myofunctional Therapy
WHAT IS IT?
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is a form of physical therapy that focuses on retraining the muscles of the face, mouth, and tongue to improve breathing, speaking, chewing, and swallowing patterns. It’s often used in collaboration with dentists, orthodontists, speech-language pathologists, and ENT specialists.
Goals of therapy
Myofunctional therapy is designed to retrain the muscles of the face, tongue, and mouth to support optimal breathing, speaking, and swallowing. The primary goals include promoting proper oral rest posture—encouraging the tongue to rest on the roof of the mouth, lips to remain closed, breathing to occur through the nose and correct swallow pattern. Therapy helps correct dysfunctional habits like mouth breathing and tongue thrust, which can impact facial growth, dental development, speech, and sleep quality. By improving tongue mobility, strengthening orofacial muscles, and guiding healthier patterns, myofunctional therapy supports long-term results in orthodontic and dental treatment, enhances clarity in speech, and contributes to better sleep and overall well-being—especially when started early in life.
